Homelessness

More than 116,000 Australians will be homeless tonight. One third of homeless people in Australia are under 18 years old. Domestic violence is the single biggest cause of homelessness in Australia. (ABS, 2016)

Those who are experiencing homelessness face immense isolation. Society has many preconceived ideas about what causes homelessness. A home is not just a physical house but is a foundation for safety and security. Charities like Dignity, The Good Box and The Big Issue are working towards restoring dignity and empowering people to move forward with the goal of ending homelessness.

We sometimes are unsure how to help. You can either donate to charities that are helping people who have lost their homes, or you can support Social Enterprises working in this space. Goods 4 Good are reviewing these Social Enterprises and are excited to bring their products to you soon, so you can support their mission in ending homelessness in Australia.

Each state government have their own strategy for reducing homelessness. For example, the NSW Government has committed to reducing street homelessness in NSW by 50 per cent by 2025, one of the NSW Government’s 14 Premier’s Priorities.

Homelessness Australia is the national peak body for homelessness.
